KUALA LUMPUR: Popular local comedian Zami Ismail (pic), 67, who was fondly known for his character Pak Uda of Pi Mai Pi Mai Tang Tu fame, has died of a heart attack at the National Heart Institute (IJN).
The actor, who sought treatment for heart problems at the Ampang Hospital last month, died at 10.30am after being warded for a week at IJN.
According to the actor’s second child, 25-year-old Ahmad Yamashita Zami, his father had requested to be buried at his place of birth in Tapah Road, Perak.
Zami leaves behind wife Hanizan Ibrahim, and nine children including actor Mohd Saopi, better known as Opie, and film and drama director Mohd Latiff or Hitler.
Opie said his father was so diligent and committed to his work that he had gone to filming locations despite being unwell.
Meanwhile, Karyawan president Datuk Freddie Fernandez said the comedian’s death was a huge loss to the local entertainment industry.
“He (Zami) was supposed to have been invited as a guest for the Pesta Lawak on Sunday. We will now hold an appreciation night in his honour instead,” he said.
Zami also acted in almost 20 films, including two which have not been shown, Husin Mon dan Jin Pakai Toncit and Shh… Dia Datang.
He won the Best Comedy Actor award at the Ninth Malaysian Film Festival (FFM9) in 1991 for his role in the film Mat Som. – Bernama
