Some people have been wondering why the debate was in Chinese, not in English or Malay. There were those who said that since the two politicians were Chinese from the two political divide and they were talking about Chinese politics, so there should not be a problem. Well after more than 50 years of independence, there are some who are not that confident talking in the Malaysian lingua franca. And their own mother tongues are still supreme. Then the keynote address by the Prime Minister was in English. Woow! What a way to start a debate.

A friend of mine thought that he was following the debate through a tv channel from outside Malaysia, either in Hongkong or Singapore. He was confident if ever such a debate was aired live in Indonesia or Thailand, he would certainly said that mediuam used could either be in Thai or Indonesian. “Well, you know Malaysia-lho,” he said. “And since I don’t understand Chinese and not familiar with the flair of the Malay interpretation, as provided by ITNM, I did not fully understand what the debate was all about.” And this friend of mine is an Indonesian Chinese. In due course both of us ended up watching one of the international news network provided by ASTRO.

Pressing time for Shahrizat the star 2 feb 2012 analysis

By Joceline Tan

Datuk Seri Shahrizat Jalil returns from Mecca tomorrow to face some very tough questions regarding her political future and the NFC typhoon that is threatening to blow her family off their feet.

EARLIER this week, text messages went out to the ladies in Wanita Umno to be at the KLIA to welcome home Datuk Seri Shahrizat Jalil from Mecca. They were also told to bring along their telekung so that they could proceed to the nearby mosque for prayers. But Shahrizat apparently did not want the fuss and the plan now is for the ladies to convene at her Damansara Heights residence on Friday night. Shahrizat has been seeking spiritual solace since the National Feedlot Centre (NFC) issue erupted and this has been her second umrah in two months. Her life has turned upside down and her political career is in tatters. She and her family are under investigation, the assets of the family-owned NFC have been frozen and a top-level team led by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been tasked with finding a solution to the cattle rearing project.

She returns to work next week and is expected to attend the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. But the insider talk is that she may be asked to extend her leave for another three weeks or perhaps even indefinitely while the authorities investigate. The Women, Family and Community Development Minister is at the lowest point in her life and it is a good thing that many of her Wanita Umno ladies are standing by her because of her track record as the Wanita Umno chief. But public opinion is against her and many in her own party are critical of what has happened. They are worried that the issue is dragging the party down but they have closed ranks and are keeping their opinions to themselves.

To date, the only person who has attempted to defend her has been Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and even he clamped up after it was revealed that the NFC had used the Government loan to invest in a pair of luxurious condominiums. The exposé on the condominiums was a tipping point for the issue; that was the point when what was essentially a poorly managed project became a full-blown scandal. Those in Umno understand that projects do not always run according to plan especially when it involves live animals. But they drew a line when it came to using a soft loan to invest in high end property. It coloured public perception about the project, her husband and NFC executive chairman Datuk Salleh Ismail and their three children who are on the NFC payroll.

Her family’s role in the NFC has been under the magnifying glass the last two months. The family has been unsuccessful in countering the allegations from Pakatan Rakyat politicians. They were slow to respond to the issues raised and they have allowed their detractors to set the agenda and control the conversation. When they did respond, the explanation was always somewhat incomplete and less than convincing. Worse, each new explanation raised fresh questions. For instance, a rather flamboyant businessman called Datuk Shamsulbahrin Ismail was recently charged with cheating Salleh of RM1.7mil in fraudulent consultancy fees but Shamsulbahrin has retaliated by accusing Salleh of hiring him to bribe those investigating the issue.

Salleh’s explanation was that he had hired Shamsulbahrin to handle media relations after the issue broke last year but Shamsulbahrin did not deliver and kept asking for more payment. People simply did not know who and what to believe. On the one hand, Shamsulbahrin is an alleged conman who has been charged with cheating two other people; on the other, RM1.7mil is an awful lot of money to pay a so-called media consultant upfront. The family’s poor handling of the crisis has baffled many of their friends. They are well-educated, super-polite and have always come across as a picture-perfect family. But they seem completely unprepared for the treacherous waters they are wading through now. Their inexperience has made it easy for their detractors to veer into exaggeration and distortion.

That was apparently why Shahrizat filed a libel suit against PKR strategy chief Rafizi Ramli and Wanita chief Zuraidah Kamaruddin. They had gone to town on the issue and Rafizi has even become some sort of a breakout star in his party. Shahrizat’s aim was to stop them from making further wild allegations. Shahrizat has put up a brave front. She appeared at a number of Wanita Umno events in Pahang, Malacca and Johor wearing sunny smiles and she is due in Kota Baru on Monday. She is determined not to let the issue distract her from her Wanita Umno duties. Her hosts in each state have been very respectful of her feelings. But it is a given that she will not contest the next general election. The Umno fraternity does not mind her remaining as Wanita Umno leader until the next party election since she was elected to that post. But there is widespread opinion that she should let go of her Cabinet position.

This is the dilemma she is wrestling with. Would resigning as minister be seen as the right thing to do under the circumstances or would it cast aspersions on her claim that she is not in the wrong? The pressure is building. Shortly before she went on leave, a minister had asked her to her face when she was quitting. When she replied that the Prime Minister had not said anything, the minister told her there was no need to wait till the Prime Minister tells her to go. Politics is a cruel business and to be fair to Shahrizat, she had sought an appointment with the Prime Minister shortly after the issue erupted in November and offered to resign all her posts. The Prime Minister had apparently told her to keep cool and hold on. But, said an insider, few had imagined it would escalate into something so big and complicated.

Things are still spiralling downhill and the scary part is that the issue may not have hit rock-bottom yet. The concern in Umno circles is that the issue is hurting the party big time and they want it to stop. It looks like people want blood and they will not be satisfied until heads roll. Excerpts from Star Columnist, Joceline Tan, as appeared on 2 February 2012.

Comments:

Political leaders nust always assume they have a duty to serve the people and serve they will at whatever cost. The question to everyone’s mind is how on earth does someone get itself involved in “things” other than cattle rearing, which triggered the NFC so-called “scandal”. Shouldn’t this someone concentrate on cattle-rearing, and nothing else. Promminent family in Malaysian politics, I mean anybody must stick to the original mission.
DILEMA AYAH CHIK zulkifli noordin 1 feb 2012 Dipetik daripada Zul4Kulim, 01 Feb 2012.

Salam 2 all.

“Saudara-saudara sekelian percayalah. Kita menentang UMNO bukan kerana nama dia UMNO. Kita menentang Barisan Nasional bukan kerana dia lama memerintah Kerajaan.

JELAS MAKSUD ‘AMANAT HADI 1981’

JELAS MAKSUD ‘AMANAT HADI 2003’!

PERLEMBAGAAN PERSEKUTUAN ITU CUKUP ISLAMIK!

POLITIK DUALAM?

Keluarga berpecah. Adik beradik berpisah! Rumahtangga berkecai! Suami isteri bercerai berai! Solat dua imam menjadi-jadi! Hubungan keluarga terputus! Kenduri diboikot! Sembelihan orang UMNO jadi haram!

Jadi cuba bayangkan perasaan Ayah Chik sekarang?

With Anwar’s acquittal, Malaysians are poised to enter a new ball game in national politics. So says someone who claims to be from both the devides. As a veteran politician being 70 years of age and had been a former UMNO stalwart and later a Pakatan Rakyat anchorman, he is excited to chart his own political equation as to where Malaysians will vote in the coming General Election dubbed as “coming soon” by insiders. His mind is set. He knows the trend of the Malay voters. he knows the trend of the Chinese and the Indian voters. And he would not rely on another political tsunami, not in the next few years. When asked for his opinion about PM Najib’s Economic Transformation Programmes he would not comment. Neither would he say Barisan Nasional comeback in the offing after Anwar’s acquittal. Also when asked if Anwar is indeed a factor in the new political game, he just says there will be a lot of other “x” factors, one being the moral issue, which Anwar has to be reconciled with.

I was in Jakarta and Bandung last week. And I have heard an intellectual friend of mine, who is equally interested in Indonesian and Malaysian politics, saying the Malay Nusantara still want their leaders perform with integrity, socially, politically and religiously. There are no two ways about it. Ideally speaking but when it comes to reality he lamented that “I’m lost”. Anyway, Joceline Tan (JT) of “The Star” has said something about the Pakatan Rakyat’s roadmap to Putrajaya come the next General Elections. Probably one has to read what JT has to say to stay convinced on the Anwar factor, now that he is being acquited. Points to ponder for all Malaysian voters.

Pakatan now riding the Anwar factor

Analysis By Joceline Tan

The Pakatan Rakyat convention was about riding on the momentum of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s court acquittal but the man is now under pressure to get his act together and show he has what it takes to lead the coalition.

THE man of the hour at the Pakatan Rakyat convention was Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and he made a grand entrance after lunch.

He had flown into Penang, from where he was escorted like a home-coming hero to Alor Setar for the Pakatan event.

It was his first appearance at a Pakatan event after his stunning acquittal last week and the camera flashes that trailed him from the car to the stage must have almost blinded him.

PKR is finding its voice again and the party’s logo dominated among the flags and banners that flushed the roads leading to the stadium.

For a while, PKR was treated like some sort of diseased cousins by PAS and DAP but with Anwar clearing the sodomy hurdle, the party is back in the reckoning.

The colourful banners announcing the event featured Anwar in a dominant pose alongside PAS president Datuk Seri Hadi Awang, DAP leader Lim Kit Siang and Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak.

PKR deputy president Azmin Ali’s speech at the opening was twice as long as that of his PAS counterpart Mohamed Sabu.

On stage, Anwar had the seat of honour, sandwiched between the two Tok Gurus – Hadi and Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat.

The first Pakatan convention in 2009 was to launch the coalition and the second in 2010 was to unveil the Buku Jingga.

This one should have taken place last year. But every single party in the coalition had its own issues, chief of which was Anwar’s then pending court verdict and an embarrassing sex video.

The postponement turned out to be timely and as Bukit Bendera MP Liew Chin Tong put it, “things have now taken on a different tone”.

The convention was trying to ride on the momentum of Anwar’s acquittal.

They know the court verdict has been received very positively and the international media had begun to hail Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak as a reform-minded Prime Minister.

The court decision has been hailed as sign of the reforms Najib is trying to bring into national politics and of the direction he is taking the country towards.

The choice of Kedah was to solidify the Malay ground. Kedah, among the Pakatan states, is in greatest danger now that the Malay vote has shifted back to Umno.

The gathering, said Liew, was also about opening up new fronts.

Pakatan is signalling that it is mounting a challenge on Barisan Nasional’s traditional turf – namely the Felda vote, the civil service, its fixed deposits of Sabah and Sarawak and postal votes.

Hence, the floor was given to representatives from these key sectors during the morning portion of the event.

Among the speakers were former Sabah state secretary Tan Sri Simon Sipaun, former naval Brig-Gen Datuk Hadi Khatab, Felda activist Siti Khalijah and student leader Akram Ikrami.

Former Bar Council chairman Datuk S. Ambiga, who represented the NGOs, was rewarded with loud applause.

Ambiga draws mixed reaction from the Muslims for her role in the controversial apostasy case but there is no denying she has become a household name among the Malays after the Bersih 2.0 protest.

Pakatan also took the opportunity to showcase some of their young and up-and-coming leaders, which was a good thing because some of the oldest players in Malaysian politics today are in Pakatan and several of them were so frail that they had to be helped onto and down the stage.

The spotlight is on Anwar again but if the Alor Setar crowd was hoping for directions or hints of what he had in mind, they were disappointed.

In fact, he was almost upstaged by Lim Guan Eng for whom every speech is a ceramah and who had no qualms about blowing his Chief Minister’s trumpet.

Anwar has lost a great deal in the last three years and his Pakatan colleagues are keeping their fingers crossed that he can now get his act together and focus on their Putrajaya dream.

Pakatan leaders are as obsessed about getting to Putrajaya as the Barisan is about holding on to the capital.

They got the audience yesterday quite excited when they announced that the next convention would be in Putrajaya.

They say the convention is testimony that the coalition is coagulating into a permanent group that will rival the tenacity of its Barisan rival.

They say it is all right to sleep in the same bed and have different dreams as long as they stay united against the common enemy.

It sounds great in theory. In practice, it is another story.

As the Pakatan leaders said their piece on stage, an elderly PAS official was vigilantly trying to keep the men and women segregated in the press section.

As a result of the limited seating near the press area, some of the male reporters and bloggers spilled over into the area reserved for the women.

The official came by several times to impose his idea of a moral society.

When some reporters told him they were having problems with the power supply and whether he could help sort it out, he said: “That issue, I cannot help you. That is not my duty.”

Pakatan leaders say they want to bring change to the country and they are promoting the Buku Jingga as some sort of New Deal that they want to bring to Malaysians.

But regardless of whether or not they get to Putrajaya, some things will never change.

Indonesia lost to Malaysia in a penalty shootout on Monday in the Southeast Asian Games soccer final at Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, South Jakarta.

The teams were tied 1-1 until the extra time.

Indonesia scored early in the fourth minute with a header from Gunawan Dwi Cahyo. However, Malaysia controlled the game after Omar Mohamad Asrarudin equalized in the 35th minute.

In the penalty shootout, two Indonesian players failed to score, while only one Malaysian striker failed.

Malaysia previously beat Indonesia 1-0 in the qualifying round.

The Indonesian and Malaysian squads have faced off 13 times in the history of the Southeast Asian Games, ending in six victories for each country and a 0-0 tie during a qualifying match in the 1979 Games.

Two of the nations’ SEA Games matches were final-round showdowns that were held when Indonesia hosted the Games: Malaysia’s 1-0 triumph in 1979 while playing Indonesia and Indonesia’s 1-0 victory in 1987.

Semarang-born local soccer legend Ribut Waidi scored the only goal in 1987’s final match in injury time.

That match was also held at Bung Karno Stadium, then called the Senayan Main Stadium, in Senayan, South Jakarta.

Very rare that we hear positive comments from Indonesian spectators if their team were to lose against Malaysia. But tonight both Indonesians and Malaysians gave almost equally positive assessment and opinions after the game. Congratulations to both Malaysia and Indonsia. Keep up the good sporting spirit.

There is nothing much to comment except that throughout the history of UIA, we know where public opinion has been tilted. Probably one has to analyze the content of the press release before making any comment. I would rather stay apolitical. Posted by AIDC, October 21st, 2011 | Double Standard Antara Aziz Bari & Rosti Saruwono

Don’t tell me that all these years since 1955 political leaders of both the divide are still searching for winnable candidates. Prime Minister, DS Abd. Najib Tun Razak has hinted the need to find such winnable candidates of “high quality government and high standards of governance” material to spearhead his next election campaign. At least one blogger, Sakmongkol AK47 made such remarks in his blog of 18 August 2011. (http://www.sakmongkol.blogspot.com).

Wonder, after more than 50 years, our beloved Malaysia still lack winnable candidates material, and all along relying on sub-standards. And today we are still talking about winnable candidates. Don’t tell me that all along political parties and leaders could not care less about quality and good governance.

Then, it must be true that in the yesteryear hints such as “even if you choose ‘dead woods’ or ‘tunggul mati’ as candidates, your party could still win seats. At that time presumably there was no such thing as selecting candidates, based on merits and meticulous scrutiny. Not even popularity through public opinion or positive perception. Forget about candidates with high political maturity, high education standard, high moral values and communicative ability to empower the mass.

It was amusing though, that in those days the people used to hear outcries that “their representatives in the House were just warming their seats in delight.” Allegedly there was a case or two, who did an excellent job of literally licking stamps to seal off envelopes containing marriage invitation cards while debate was still ongoing in the House. Wow! Sakmongkol could be right when he asked “ Just what are winnable candidates? And he answered the question himself: “It can only mean one thing. It’s a search for leadership material which is committed to a plan making this government into a good government with good governance.

“Surely this must be the foundation of a leadership committed to transforming the country. Barely what?- 2 years into his premiership, already the PM is hailed as the father of Transformation? What has been transformed other than a copious amount of announcements that don’t seem to subside, we haven’t seen transformation yet in the fundamentals- the leadership material for example.”

What Sakmongkol was asking and giving his answer to his own question as well, is just a typical of what kind of leaders the country has had for such a long period pof time. Or perhaps such good-quality leaders that merit “winnable candidate of good government and high standards of governance” was a rare species then. Sorry to say-lah! For one thing, I quite agree with Sakmongkol about the idea of announcing “honourable titles” to a leader such as “ father of this and father of that” even before any such great concept or idea is still in its hatching or formative stage to warrant such a “legendary” status. Haven’t we had enough of these “bapakship so far and I think let time decide if tht or this person deserves as such. Amusingly, too Sakmongkol did touch on the current PM status, hailed as “the Father of Transformation”. For all the matters we would not even know the desired end-results.Not just yet. And mind you this “status” is only meant for “PM materials”. Sorry-lah for those lesser leaders!

Well, that is politics. It has nothing to do with good government or high standards of governance. The current political trendy is either you are a pro- establishment or an anti-establishment block. Perception is high on the agenda list. You are either linked to a pro -establishment or you are considered an anti-establishment (meaning opposition block). Neither nor is out of the question. Full stop!

While there are some who might be willing to share that it is the government who should boost its presence in the internet in response to the new media which is increasingly popular among the younger generation. Apparently that must and should be so. And some who might also say that the government should be transparent when issuing “related informtions.” All these comments make us feel that the government must be held responsible to ensure mainstream media must fulfill the consumer need of the young. This is because s some claim that the young “do not trust the information from the mainstream and traditional media. They say the young and the new media are inseparable and considered synonymous one may wonder their significance and relevancy by which the government could play? And yet again it must be clear what and who the “government” are you referring to.

Today there are two governments run by different sets of people. On one side there is the so-called “the government led by the majority” nd on the other there is “the government led by the minority”. You know what I mean-lah! And the people at large are confused when someone mention “government of the people” while in actual fact they sre referring to “the government led by the minority.” These are the people who will shout and brag about saying ” we represent the rakyat (the people).

So the definition of the term “government” and ‘the rakyat” is not clear. The armchair critics “just say the government” (which government?) and political leaders always mention “we serve the rakyat” (which rakyat: the majority or the minority?) Confused confused and more confused. Eventually this has led us to believe that whoever control the media should control the mind and most importantly the perception. And so we come to one central issue: Is it perception or integrity that we are dealing with. And as most people say since the new media is more popular among the young does that mean the traditional mainstream media is not because its function is mainly based on integrity? How then you define integrity in relation to information? Then can someone distinctly claim all informations whether they come from the new media or the mainstream media are what the media jargon say “matter- of- fact information”. Or the information are just political gossips based on rumours and are spinned as “the truth from a genuine source”.

To me I would rather say what the information that we get in the new media are still questionable becuse more often than not they a re based on opinion and will certainly create what one could say as “perceived idea.” And presumably this will take centre stage in due course and this idea will then be picked by the young as the true information they could not resist to hear or read. On the contrary there are some who insist such information are just hearsay spinned by some political lunatics. So it is not entirely correct to say that the “goernment” should do something to justify their thinking when it comes to fulfilling the sonsumer needs of the young in terms of the role of the new media. It has got to with the people who control the new media and the motives they would have had to help sway the young to switch side. As for the older genertion .k.a. the matured they will stick to their “sense of purpose” and will not switch to “the popular decision” of the young. Unless of course political leaders of the governments of “both sides of the divide” are competing vigorously that they must and should put their interest in the young. No matter what possible means they can use to gauge popularity and fathom their political strength among the restless young.

Forget about integrity and will mintain “full speed ahead” to steer perception of the young. That is the target. The young could not care less about the integrity of the mainstream media! For reference below is a report by BERNAMA on the New Media Presence with opinions from two notable personalities:

Government should boost New Media presence New Straits Times 11 August 2011

<ins>KUALA LUMPUR: The government must boost its presence on the internet by mastering the new media such as ‘Face book‘ and ‘Twitter‘ which are highly popular, especially among the young.</ins>

<ins>Institut of Mind Development (INMIND) chief executive Norizan Sharif said
the conventional way of tackling issues using the mainstream media was
ineffective. </ins>

<ins>
“The government must respond to the new media, otherwise the people treat
its allegations as true. </ins>

<ins>
“Currently, we don’t see the government responding in Facebook, we also
don’t see any (government) initiative in answering in blogs and Twitter. We can</ins>

<ins>see many opposition Members of Parliament in Twitter, but on the government
side, the number is dismal,” he told Bernama.

Norizan was commenting on a statement by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein yesterday who said the opposition used the new media to instigate the people to take part in illegal activities for political gain although the news they highlighted were untrue.

Hishammuddin said the government found it difficult to explain the situation</ins>

<ins>on the illegal gathering on July 9 despite the various existing media channels
being used, following the widespread use of the new media by the opposition.

Norizan, who also wrote in the blog http://www.nobisha.com said the absence
of government engagement in the new media handicapped it so much so that it
encountered difficulties in answering issues relating to the illegal
gathering.

He also suggested that the government activate efforts to download every
announcement or good news to YouTube because studies found that the young spent
part of their time surfing the internet.

Meanwhile, Universiti Kebangsaan’s History, Politics and Strategy Study
Centre senior lecturer Abd Ghapa Harun said the mainstream media must also
dispel the fallacy that they still monopolised news distribution.

“It is important that the government is transparent when issuing related
information when facing an issue because this will build confidence in the media
being used by the government.

Abd Ghapa also said that emphasising a high level of integrity among the
mainstream media by the government, would in itself weaken the public trust in
the alternative media.

He said the integrity of a large portion of the content of the alternative
media was questionable compared to that of the mainstream media. — BERNAMA</ins>
